If you read about the test that Arnold Jacobs did using the principal brass players of the CSO, you will discover that the amount of air is the same for the same notes. For instance, the pedal Bb on the bass bone should use the same amount of air as a low Bb on the tuba. If each instrument plays a middle C, then the air speed, air quantity, and pressure, in theory, should all be identicle. Players probably think this because bass trombones usually play too loud (not that I'm saying that its a bad thing. I enjoy hearing a good bass bone wail away as much as the next low brass player).
