I got my start on a 186 BBb in Jr. High back in the early '70s. Bought one for myself after college. After several others over the years I now have a 186-4V CC. This is a great all-around 4/4 CC tuba. The 5th valve would make it even more versatile, but I haven't missed it much.

In the Miraphone family, I would suggest trying the 186, the 188 (or the 187 if you're a BBb guy), the 191 (BBb) and the 1291 horns (BBb or CC). IMO, the 186 is very adaptable, and can work in quintet, pit orchestra, community band, etc. BUT it may not have the weight of sound necessary for being the only tubist in the community band or orchestra (unless YOU have the power to make it so). If you need a little more weight to the sound, the 188 (187) horns are also very good. I'm very interested to see the new 1291 CC horn. I'm not sure I'd recommend the 1295CC, however.
