Dat's are higher quality, Mini's are more affordable (but still better than cassettes). All though no commercial cassette decks have mic pre-amps, the multi-trackers do. You can get a 4 track cassette for about the same price as a 2 track Mini-Disk ($200 something). Also, with the right card and software, you could use your computer to record yourself.
The digital mediums are great, esp. for multi-tracking; but IMHO a quality reel to reel is still the best- they have a warmness and depth that makes digital sound sterile in comparison.
What ever medium you choose, get the best mikes you can. Microphones are the weakest link in the recording chain, and will have more of an impact on the quality of the recording than the medium will. Microphone selection and placement is a Black Art. You may wish to check out Electronic Musician for some tips and tricks.
