I remeber reading somewhere that the audition was held in 79 and the three that made it to the finals were of course Warren Deck , Sam Palafian and Don Harry. As I understand it Warren made it to the finals on a much smaller horn than he is playing now possibly a Miraphone or a Meinl. Sam Palafian was playing on that William Bell model CC that he always plays on or atleast used to and Don Harry possibly his Alex CC. After hearing them all in the finals they asked Warren if he had a bigger horn and he had his teachers (William Rose)Holton CC waiting boxed and ready to be shipped next day if this situation came up. Then the rest is history. Now this is how I have heard it from a friend who was in New York in college at the time, so I could be wrong.
