This is the piece that won the tuba ensemble composition competetion sponsored by the University of Miami Tuba Ensemble in the early 1970's. When I was studying with Connie Weldon at the University of Miami (mid to late 1970's) we used euphonium on the first part, F tuba on the second and CC or BB flat on the third and fourth parts. Check your competetion rules before you set your instrumentation. Also, my opinion is that you should consider the first movement for the competetion.

Some rehearsal tips, all of the musicians should know their parts and the other parts well, it is very easy to get the parts out of sync in this piece. Reherse slowy at first and attain percision before you increase the tempo, lack of percision on the part of a musician or the group will be very easily noticed in this piece. Pay attention to the dynamics, there is a lot going on in this piece and dynamics can easly be overlooked. Learn the other movements that you will not be playing, this can help your overall feel for the piece.

This is a difficult piece , but one that is worth the effort. When played musically it is very impressive.

good luck,
