Yeah, the allure of a shiny new horn is hard to resist... But wait a minute! The disconcerting thing is, if I read Julie's original post correctly, that someone is requiring these shiny horns, and she will not be permitted to use an old beater, no matter how well it plays. Julie, if you are reading down this far, I am sorry I haven't answered your question (Jay, Paul, and Ken have done a fine job of that already) but perhaps you will want to ask a question of your band director, or of whomever is in charge of the bands you have been chosen to play in, as to why must it be new and shiny? Musicians will agree on the merit of a fine sounding instrument, regardless of its looks, and the audience probably won't see you all the way in the back anyhow.
