The principal trombonist in the Symphony here had me "un-lacquer" his bell.

Afterward, he coated it religiously with car wax...

...I would say that other unlacquered instruments don't tarnish much faster than his wax-coated one did.

Summary: "Wax don't do nothin'."

I haven't seen Bach, Schilke, Yamaha, Holton, nor Gemeinhardt, Selmer, King, etc. use wax as a finish for their instruments. Maybe because "Wax don't...[etc.]"
