There are plenty of military types that read this bbs and I'm sure you'd get a different response from each of them. You'll generally get a more accurate reading of life in the service from people that are currently serving(not to say you can't learn a lot from service band veterans), as the saying goes" times they are a changin". I would check your TUBA roster for some email adresses and fire off some inquiries to specific people(folks are usually happy to answer questions if you catch them at the right time and that's the beauty of email). Situations will vary from service to service and even band to band. Hope this helps.
