Actually Curtis Mathes TVs were all advertisement, no quality. You had to take them to their own shops because no other shop would touch them. Cheap parts, cheap production, marginal circuits. They tended to use fewer parts and tubes than anyone else and so performed poorly in anything but strong signal locations.

By only selling direct, the profits were super, and the customers somewhat distant to cut down on complaints.
