As a multi-allergic myself I would say:
Remove any offensive agent. If scratches or wear on the mouthplate have abused the lips mechanically, more vulnerable skin layers might have been exposed.
Vaseline would be one of the last things I would apply to sore skin.
Zovir/Zovirax is intended for cold sores. But I must say that the lotion part of it is very gentle to the skin. So that is what I use on sore lips and the skin close to them.
And I would rather invest in a Sterling, or even gold, mouthplate, than do risky experiments with nail polish, which is very offensive until it is hardened so much, that it will drop off like dust.
