Funny you should mention that.

Last night at rehearsal, our band's string-bass player was doing some pizzicato octaves. I think it was a quiet section in the Krance arrangement of Begin the Beguine. The bottom octave she played seemed to be swallowed up into the floor, and what I heard sounded just like the upper octave note that preceded it, but with less power.

I think orchestral composers perfer it to the tuba because the strings are the primary instruments in an orchestra, with winds and brass adding mostly color. The tuba is definitely a more colorful instrument than the string bass. (Donning Nomex...)

And I forgot to look for that number. What can I say? Five minutes had gone by.
