I have to reiterate Matt's dictum: COMMUNICATE. That's how I found my current horn. I went to the shop (sorry, not Dillon's) to try a couple of BBb's that were advertized. Spent considerable time in a practice room trying them out. Came to the conclusion that, even though they were both nice horns, they were not "picking me" to coin the phrase. On the way out I stopped to chat with the salesman and thank him for the time. So he sez -- "do you know what you're looking for?" Then I sez -- "I think I'm looking for a medium sized 4 valve Eb" Then he sez -- "Oh. We have an old Mirafone Eb over in the corner" "Old Mirafone" Ha. A 1970 183-4U that looked like it had never been played. That one "picked me" The rest, as they say, is history.
So, talk to the nice man, or woman. You might find YOUR horn.
