resonance

In reading this BBS and speaking to several other brass players, I have seen/heard countless opinions as to material resonance (i.e. brass vs. silver; gold brass vs whatever, lacquer vs. dry). I (knowing just enough about physics to be dangerous) realize that, obviously, different metals will reonate differently, but, is this subtle change in vibration really noticable in a perf. setting? I recently played on a rose brass horn for a while and noticed some subtle differences, I didn't know if they were what I was hearing being attached to the horn, or a real difference audible to anyone who happened to be listening. I guess what I am asking is: Are the differences in resonance anywhere near as important as, for example, problems with a concert venue's acoustics? And, what are some opinions about material resonance in tubas?

thanks in advance.
