I have always thought stainless steel would be the ideal material for mass-produced tuba parts, particularly tuning slides. They could be made in one piece, with no solder joints, and would be lighter and stronger than brass. The larger tubing and bell would probably be too expensive. But I do not believe sound would be an issue. The sound is in the air, and metal vibrations just contaminate it a bit. Reach up and hold the bell of your tuba with your left hand to stop its vibration while you are playing. If it makes any difference at all it's usually an improvement, in my opinion. An all-stainless steel tuba designed carefully to avoid sympathetic vibrations would be wonderful. But some kind of adhesive would have to be used instead of solder.
