It's not that your view is in the vast minority...it's a matter of being realistic. Of course, if people learned better, and were brought up better, the world would be a better place to live. Short of being able to influence the whole of society away from current trends before they walk into a store, what can people/retailers/customers/you/me/whoever realistically do to minimize breakage/damage/loss of valuable inventory? The nature of the product dictates that it be somehow accessible for trial. If average modern customer behavior is such as you describe, it would seem necessary to set up a system where the customer is closely supervised, and/or have the customers sign an agreement that states that they are responsible for any damage. Get an up-front cash damage deposit before they try an instrument. Set up separate trial rooms with carpet on the floor and no exposed sharp edges, and a surveillance camera. Is this too much trouble to protect valuable inventory? Or post on your wall a behavior guideline that you hope will not offend your responsible customers.

By the way, this "inner-city couple" you mentioned, did they have an ID stating such? Did they volunteer this information, i.e. "We're from the inner-city, may we ask you some questions?" Did you recognize them from when you were driving through the inner-city and saw them going into or coming out of their home? Or did you make an assumption based on something else?
