And when I was in college around 1960 I was thinking of getting my own tuba and our band director told me he could get me a Mirafone concert tuba (not sure of the model) for $800.
Seemed like too much money at the time - after all a year's tuition at Harvard had just gone up to an astounding $1000 per year, so I passed on it and put up with playing the band's Sousaphone for a few more years.
