Music as a career?

I've reached the period in my life where I have to start thinking of my future. I've been thinking of pursuing several majors, but each has its major drawbacks. I've just recently started to think of playing music professionally. It seems that I'm most happy when I'm making music. I play (of course) tuba, so I guess I could play in an orchestra of some sort, and I also play the bass (electric) which opens up a different genre of music. I'm not looking to be the next pop sensation, my goal isn't to blow the music industry off its foundation, with my own record company, billion dollar contracts, and 40 model girlfriends. I just want enough cash to live off, with a little to spend on luxuries. I was just wondering if it is possible to balance a career in music with other work, and whether landing a career as a "full time" (if there is such a thing) musician is reaps enough to live on with a little extra? Thanks for the input!

James
