As a sometimes teacher, I have found that:

- not knowing one's scales (major and all forms of minor) in one's complete range - with the ability to execute without thought ( without having to "mull things over" prior to execution) at the top of one's own technical level

- not being able to play any (much less "all") scales in thirds

and

- not being able to play "by ear" simple familiar tunes in easy keys, much less any keys...

...all go hand-in-hand with poor sight-reading skills.

Put bluntly (and with no intention of insulting), poor sight-reading skills are directly correlated to not having done one's "homework".
