This is a topic on which I've offered (obviously) unwelcomed input (received flames galore) in the past.

I just stumbled across a convenient example. (The link is below.)

The link shows a bassoon for sale that would be strongly considered by a very serious bassoon student or someone on the audition circuit. Most all of these bassoonists are not at all wealthy. Probably, the average bassoonist in this situation has about the same financial resources as the average tuba person. The price of the instrument linked is not at all unreasonable, as far as the status of the stable market for these instruments.

When the "most expensive" fine tubas cost $12K - $15K, rarely need maintenance and many very fine tubas are available for 1/4 of this price range , we should perhaps keep the prices of "fine" bassoons, violins, 'cellos, basses, etc. in perspective and realize that the financial sacrifices that we make to acquire fine instruments are significantly less than those of many.
