You are right. Carl Fischer may have used other labels as well, but they did not use just plain "York" on stencils.

The old catalog shows Bb and Eb helicons and sousaphone, calling the latter "Monster helicon bass". In fact, the nomeclature is interesting. All instruments were called "bass". The 6/4 instruments (keeping in mind that a 6/4 Eb is about the same size as a 4/4 Bb) were called "Monster basses". "Tuba" appeared only once. Here's the list of instruments, using the name exactly as it is in the catalog, plus my abbreviated description of the models:

Eb Bass or Tuba: #640--3v top-action (low-pitch only), #641--the same but with a low-pitch attachment on high-pitch instrument.

Monster Eb Bass: #660--3v LP TA, #661--3v LP&HP TA, #662 and 663--the same but with four valves.

Monster Eb Bass: #670, 671, 672, and 673--same as above but with front-action valves

BBb Bass: #700, 701, 702, and 703--same as 660 series

BBb Bass / C Bass: #712--4v BBb front-action, #692--4v CC front-action

Monster BBb Bass: #720 and 721--same as 640 series

Monster BBb Bass: #730--low-pitch only with 3 valves and front action

Eb Helicon Bass: #750 series same as 660 series

Monster Eb Helicon Bass: #760-766, including the combinations of bell up (rain-catcher sousaphone) and bell front, 3 or 4 valves, one model with high-pitch (the others were all low pitch), and one model with a 28-inch bell.

Monster BBb Helicon Bass: #780--3v LP 22.5" bell up, #786--3v LP 26" bell front, #790 same as 786 but with 28" bell. This is a standard sousaphone.

BBb Helicon Bass: #770 series same as 660 series. This is a standard helicon, not a sousaphone.

I have a couple of sheets that don't seem to have been bound in with the catalog, but were probably inserted flyers. Unlike the catalog, they include prices:

Bell Front Model / Eb and BBb Side Action: #676 Eb 3v fixed bell front, #716--same as 712 but with fixed bell front. Prices for the Eb ranged from $165 for lacquer (cash payment) to $220.50 for "frosted" silver with gold bell paid in installments. The BBb ranged from $195 to $252.50.

Bell Front Model / Eb and BBb -- Top Action: #666 and 706, as above but with three top-action valves.

Rick "who thinks there's something interesting about the prices, but will post it to a new thread" Denney
