Dang, Rick, you must be smoking something really interesting...

Let's take your scenario and apply some more realistic parameters. In 1923, rather than the BBb bass, if one were talking Yorks, it would have made more sense to purchase the Eb Monster Bass--a far more popular and ubiquitous instrument. It went for, what, $150? So what's a York Eb monster worth today in good condition? $500-600 maybe? But let's face it, York was just another face in the crowd in 1923 and it would have made more sense to purchase a more advanced instrument rather than a York BBb upright tuba. How about a nice King recording bass?

In other words, your speculation is the sort of "What if my great-grandfather had purchased AT&T in 1895?" sort of question. He probably didn't and was more likely to buy shares in Amalgamated Buggywhip.

In fact, the popularity of the York is largely due to the opinion and abilities of a single person, who probably sounded pretty darn good on almost any trashcan-sized hunk of brass.

Invenstment's a gamble, even when it involves tubas. If you ever develop a sense of 20/20 foresight, I'd appreciate a note with your stock picks.
