Then maybe what you were actually hearing was a bunch of classical players playing Jazz. If you are a in quintet that has a wide repertoire that includes Jazz, you need at least one person in the group that can coach the ensemble on Jazz interpretation. All players should be able, however, to play and understand basics of Jazz interpretation. Also, not all arrangements are created equal. You may need to adapt the arrangement to meet your needs better, as well. Proper interpretation can be done well, but you can't just sit down and expect the arrangement to do magic.
