I agree, Klaus.

A conductor really needs to develop his/her concept of a score through silent reading of the score, playing it at the piano (not necessarily at performance tempo), using solfege (etc.).....THEN, once the concept is strong in his/her mind, it is safe to listen to other conceptions via recordings. If recordings are accessed too early in the process, the interpretation will likely end up being hollow.
