All sound travels at the same speed, but higher pitches are easily heard and can pierce through other frequencies with ease. Low sounds don't travel as far and are more affected by the environment you are in.
Developing the inner metronome inside you is essential in performance. Most musicians can nail 120 beats per measure on the dot, but can you nail 160 beats, or 60 beats.
Listening to the metronome without playing, then with playing, and then playing without the metronome can help solve some of those problems, I agree with everyones statement about watching the Conductor's body movement for the beat rather than just the baton.
oh yea, IF you can't play it in time, then you gotta slow it down at a lower tempo and then gradually increase it. this help builds technique and is more efficient especially when working with groups! Most importantly listen for the beat and try and get your playes to subdivide.........
