Circular breathing is the only effective way of holding some of the longer tones orchestras keep on asking tubas to play, especially way down in the pedals where you need a lot of air anyway. I can't remember off hand what it was, but I played a piece a while ago with a pedal Bb held for 12 bars of largo 4/4. I welcome any parlour trick which lets me do that without passing out.

James.
