That said, most people tend to learn and develop best while they are still mentally and physically "fresh", so the beginning of your practice time is a good time to develop basic skills. This work could sound like warming up, especially as I like to start with developing fluidity in my low range.

One professional symphonic tubist once told me that he doesn't believe that a tubist should have to warm up, but that "maintenance" of basic skills should be a part of most practice days. I would add to that the idea that until a certain very high level of ability is reached the maintenance should be paired with fundamental development.

that's how I see it this week, anyway.
