I used to just buckle the instrument up in the front seat. The shoulder harness did a pretty good job of holding it in place. If you are concerned about it slipping sideways towards the center of the car, you could always add a bungee cord from the middle of the shoulder strap to whatever is convenient in the middle of the car, or maybe a longer bungee cord and wrap it around the back of the seat to hook up where the seat belt begins.
