I was in a similar situation at the beginning of this past year (getting back into playing) with about the same budget. I had played a cerveny in college my senior year (school horn) and thought I wanted to buy one. Based on the recommendations of several folks on this board I tried the F. Schmidt (VMI) 2103 and the Cerveny(I think it was the 681). I ended up buying the Schdmidt and made it out of there at ~3,500 with a hard case. I've had it since last august and have really enjoyed the horn. The main thing is make sure you try whatever horn you want before you buy it.
