The second type. I have found that if you are studying with someone who can play the instrument, but cannot explain why something is working or not working, it can be very difficult to determine what is wrong and what needs to be corrected. You start to get ideas like, "I don't have a good high range," or "She's a natural player, that's why she can do more than me." All players will have problems at one time or another. It can be very frustrating if you can't analyze the problem and come to a helpful solution. I wouldn't go to a doctor that said, "Your heart doesn't sound right. Make it sound right."
