I agree with your first sentence (and overall great post, btw) and have stated that many many times over the years. However, I believe you should qualify "sports" with the adjective "individual".
In team sports, the objective is not perfection. Rather, it is merely winning. That's why I find team sports boring to watch, but admittedly a lot of fun to play.
