I agree with working extra hard on very small things to keep your mind on the music. I played bass for Guys and Dolls at my school, and if I just played the notes in time, I would tend to forget that I was playing and we'd end up at the end of the song, and I didn't even notice. The problem with that is that our drummer needed a lot of attention in staying in time. If I wasn't constantly thinking, he'd take off. Paying attention to the exact length of notes, articulation, and dynamics and being utterly anal about all of them helps keep your mind in the game.
