I personally lean towards rotary valves for reasons I explained in a previous message. But in the end it's the sound that comes out the big end that matters. Make sure you try out a bunch of instruments before you make a choice. It helps if you can make a side-by-side comparison. It's also much easier if you know what sound you're looking for before you start playing horns. As one person put it, his tuba has rotary valves (I think?) because that's what was on the horn he liked.
