On the same page as the HK ad in the International Musician, you'll also notice that the Elgin Symphony Orchestra charges a $50 deposit. The point..... everybody does this!

An audition is difficult to keep on schedule, and is made more difficult when people aren't showing up for their assigned time. The deposit is simply to ensure that the people who say they are going to be there actually show up. Charging an amount that isn't a hardship, but is yet enough that you won't just throw it away takes care of this. If you decide not to audition, simply inform them, and your deposit will be returned. Show up to play, your deposit will be returned. Schedule an audition time and blow it off, it costs you a bean. It's as simple as that.
