One of the things I like most about the York (though I hated it at first) was that I could hold the horn low and still get to the first valve slide in case an adjustment is needed.

When trying some stuff out for Doug Elliott, I pushing the first valve slide around a lot, and he asked, "Why do you do that?" I stopped immediately, and now I seem to play more in tune, though that is explained by other factors. Sometimes we play the slide game out of habit more than anything else.

But without the right mouthpiece, I could not pull the pitches above F in the staff down to where they needed to be without jumping to the next partial. It's a lot easier now.
