I am a confessed 981 fan, who likes the 3+1 set-up for ergonomical reasons. Coming from the bass bone side having a fourth valve in the left hand is not very unusual to me.

However others have different preferences. If I should suggest the closest possible 981 substitution with 4 front pistons, then it would be the 983 with a different leadpipe.

The 983 has a somewhat smaller bell than the 981. But I do not think this is the most important difference. The longer leadpipe of the 983 with its much slower increase in bore is of greater importance.

One source for a wider leadpipe ending up with the same bore at the valve cluster entry could be UMI. The brass techs on the list could tell you, whether the 52/56J leadpipe could be fitted for a 983.
