Choice of instrument certainly is a major factor. By default I am skeptical towards contra-bass instruments with a .689 bore, but they exist and some of them even have gained quite much in popularity. I find bores in the .734 to .750 range more relevant for piston contrabasses. But of course I can not be objective, as none of the .689 instruments havecroissed my path, but for a YBB631 (which did not prove itself relevant for my playing).
