If the director doesn't a) notice and b) comment, ask the section to play, say things like, "Who is rushing the 16th notes?" there probably isn't anything you can do or say that will make a difference to this player. I think the path you have recently taken is the correct one to take. Fortunately, I have not been in such a situation but I have observed it in other sections in some of the groups I have played in. It's a tough call either way but I think you make the most hay by playing your part to the best of your ability.
