Aggravating Playing Circumstances

I play with a tuba player who always rushes the beat and especially the down beat. This player especially rushes when there are 16th notes or nice technical parts in a fast tempo. The worst part is this person does not get it and know that they are rushing.

Drives me nuts. It makes it hard to play correctly because I really listen to the group and it constantly distracts me. I finally just decided last night that I will ignore this tuba player, sit away and just listen to the group and play my part and not worry about how this person plays. It worked. I had the best night since I joined the group and had more fun.

I have always liked helping players as much as I can. If I can give tips I do. So this has been tough. I have tried all kinds of suggestions to this person to try and help and it has not helped much at all. By the way, it has been 21 months of this and still very little change.

Do you or have you had similar problems and what do or did you do?
