This sort of situation seems to be common, and sectional intonation problems are even more widespread from my experience. Which is best, to match the group tuning or try to minimise the beat frequencies generated by two competing tubas? What's worse, many conductors don't seem to hear the problem. Usually the worst offenders are also the most senior members. Grin and bear it, outlast the competition, and lay out on the really bad stuff....
