They've also recorded a really outrageous "La Valse" with Maazel. But that's because "La Valse" is as much Johann Strauss as it is Ravel. Still, when it comes to things that have a lot of percussion, or a lot of woodwinds, well, that's not really their forte, shall we say. Ask percussionists how they feel about the VPO percussion section in general. You usually not hear a tremendous amount of high praise for the their woodwinds either. Bruckner is nearly all strings; brass; and tympani - that's their schtick! Still, you're right, Richard - they are expanding.

Also, let's not forget that Bruckner 8 is a piece that Bernard Haitink really likes, as has always done really well with. I happen to own their recording of it (Haitink/VPO). For my taste, I actually like the finale to flow a bit swifter, but the playing IS "echt" Bruckner.
