Yes, I've both seen and constructed such devices. You need a rod that passes through a plate that is fixed to the instrument. The rod has two adjustible stops, above and below the plate, with springs between the stops and the plate. The position of the stops determine where the rod settles, and you can make them adjustible with thumbscrews. This is easier than a turnbuckle arrangement, though you can couple the two and make it even easier. The tuning slide in question has to be honed such that it is nearly as fast as a trombone slide to function properly; otherwise the spring tension will have to be so high that it will be too hard to use during play. Because of this, it's not a reversible installation. When the slide is fast enough to work properly, it would stay where it is put without help.
