I can tune unisons and I understand about beats. But if there's more than one competing pitch, I can't identify who is where, and the notes often go by too quickly to allow enough trial and error.

But I also have a problem hearing my own pitch that is quite separate from hearing the pitch of others. When we go down sections to expose who is sharp and flat, I can accurately tell who is even a little bit off. But when it's my turn, I have trouble hearing the pitch accurately, and I think the rattling in my empty head is part of the problem.

In the groups in which I play, tuning chords is always a problem, but I've played in ensembles in tune before so I don't think it's all me, heh, heh. I can usually identify pitch problems in, say, a brass quintet without relatively little difficulty, though there often isn't time to fix the problem.
