I think it depends on the horn and your tonal ideal. If you're looking for a solo mouthpiece, a brighter sound might be ideal. I use either a PT-88 or a Jacobs Helleburg mouthpiece. I have tried both mouthpieces on several horns and for me the PT-88 is just a better all-around mouthpiece. This holds true whether I was playing on a tiny student horn, a HB horn or a Conn 24J. I know it was designed as a low register piece, but both highs and lows seem to be clearer with the 88 for me. The experience for you may be quite different. In the past I used a Mirafone C-4 for solo playing, but I just find it to be way too small and bright for my tastes, but several people posting on here like the c-4 and c-3 mouthpieces.

By the way, does anyone want to buy a slightly used C-4? I don't use it.
