My Dad taught me that a "bolt" has threads that are intended to be screwed into a nut or machine thread applications, and that a "screw" has threads that are designed to go into wood or sheet metal. However, when I browse the internet, it appears that others have different ideas.
Merriam-Webster Online seems to support my Dad's understood definition:
"a metal rod or pin for fastening objects together that usually has a head at one end and a screw thread at the other and is secured by a nut"
