Fair enough. I am no Pilafian expert, but you are correct in saying he is not what I would call a jazz musician. I'm sure he has played his fair share of jazz gigs and is a talented performer, improvisor, etc. However, he has won his fame, fortune, and adulation of fans through phenomenal recordings of classical repertoire (The Hindemith comes to mind)and teaching classical methods. Put him next to an 'old school' player like Bill Barber or Joe Tarto. While these players may not measure up to Sam's fine talent, their livelihood depended on performing the jazz genre. They are of the "Coltrane/Kerouac" generation and school, which is how I interpreted the original post.
