I just attended a masterclass with Milt Stevens (National Sym Orch, Bone)
on intonation

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW

The dude has his tuning down

Some thoughts

Produce a pitch with the tuner and play with it, return to the pitch (very revealing up and down)

he had me play Meistersinger with a constant C (uh huh, go Milt!!)

we analyzed lot's of exerpts
Shos 6, tch 6, Mahler 6, Mathis de Maler, petrouchka, firebird, dvorak 9, Fanfare dukas, etc,

Lot's of trombone stuff, but very inspiring

If you can get him in a masterclass on this subject, do it!!!

SOOOO Yes, play by ear, practice with a tuner.
Always match and adjust
