Must be something about San Antonio... I bought my first tuba in 1976 while still in high school from the tubist there (T. McLean, I think). For the horn (mid-60s vintage 163 w/huge receiver), custom bag, hard case, and mute I paid $900 cash money (LOL). It got me into and thru school, and was the horn that got me every job I've ever had. Later (1985 or so, help me Mike) I bought a terrific Alex F from Mike Sanders, the subsequent tubist in the SASO.

I'm in the Navy Band in D.C. now, and they provide me with a nice, shiny "weapon", but I still have both Alexes and marvel at the beautiful tone and, believe it or not, the excellent intonation!! (OK, just on the F. But really, the F has great pitch! Seriously!!) The classic "Alex F-hole" is there just below the staff, but this horn sings!

I'm all better now. Thank you.
