I have played the second horn I described (bare brass) for a couple auditions. It is pitched in Bb like a euph, but sounds like a small F tuba (but certainly plays a lot easier in the range). Bydlo sounds perfect on this horn, and the Planets stuff certainly sounds great too. It has a totally different presence from that of a euph. I think it delivers the drive and aggression of Mars much more effectively. I've looked around on the net a little for pics. I'll post them here if I can find any.

If "tenor tuba" was used to describe the whole class of tuba-like instruments in Bb, what would the horn I am describing be specifically called?
