With all due respect, this is a position of professional pride that may be at odds with membership in an ensemble. The ensemble player does what is best for the ensemble.

As I have said before, I have heard world-class orchestral tubists have problems with this music. It is, after all, a tenor tuba part. It is not music that is characteristic of bass and contra-bass tubas.

Were I consistent in this position, however, I'd insist that the low parts of Pictures should also be played on a tenor tuba, but, of course, I'm not suggesting that.

Rick "if it's all in a day's work, then why does this solo command so much attention when it's so small a portion of the litarature?" Denney
