The hard part is getting the guard to fit after you've taken the dents out. But it can be done with patience.
In my meager experience, brass bow guards are less trouble to fit and solder accurately. But nickel-silver guards seem to want to curl away from the bow when you solder. Use lots of clamps, work from one end and tin the inside surface of the guard before you start.
